Yevgenia Belorusets / Tobias Zielony: "I've changed my mind." Photography, literature and war

with Yevgenia Belorusets, artist and writer
and Tobias Zielony, artist
Moderation: Kimberly Bradley (author and art critic)

Since as long ago as 2014, the multi-award-winning Ukrainian human rights activist and artist Yevgenia Belorusets has been using autobiographical texts and photographic images to examine and document Russia’s invasion of her home country, Ukraine. The work has established her as a key voice in contemporary Ukrainian art. In 2016-17, Tobias Zielony photographed young Ukrainians in techno and queer scenes beyond the mainstream of Kyiv nightlife. The images show their existence to be not merely subcultural, but also a form of resistance against what was at that stage still a “hybrid” war. He drove to the Russo-Estonian border in 2022, where he continued to use photography and film to explore the effects of the war in Ukraine in the light of media and propaganda. The artists talks will focus on the urgency of artistic engagement with and commentary on war – and on how Europe’s interwovenness in these conflicts is addressed and made visible.
