Since 11 September 2001, if not before, cultural conservatives and power politicians have been suggesting that a kind of cultural world war is going on. Terrorism is cast as the scourge of the 21st century, being seen as the violent mutual impact of irreconcilable cultures. Against this background, one is inclined to ask the question what really happens when different cultures collide. How static are cultures in actual fact, in view of the fact that they are supposedly competing with one another as monolithic blocs? Or are living cultures rather to be seen as characterised by the ability to learn, and a process of constant change?
Sebastian Hesse shows here the coming together of different cultures in the Hispanic world; Christian Reister's work 'Urban BSides' comes from metropolises all round the globe; and Andreas Rost presents current impressions of Kabul. The exhibition also contains video works by Katrin Ströbel.
The address of the exhibition's website is www.ankunft-bei-aufbruch.de.
