'Bilder einer Ausstellung' ['Pictures at an Exhibition'] shows photographs of visitors to museums and galleries as they look at the exhibits on show. These are spontaneous photographs that have been created on the spur of the moment, without any preconceived idea.
In the light-bathed hall of the museum stands a brightly gleaming sculpture, seeming lost and apparently supported by its own shadow. A woman in dark clothing is just escaping out of the wide surreal space. A moment later the sculpture and the shadow would be left to themselves, but the chronicler has chosen his time to press the release button of his camera.
The pictures, the objects on view, become subjects with a resolute life of their own, while the visitors to the gallery captured in moments of opening or flight or when sunk in thought themselves fall into the role of objects: their activities are conducted by a moment, by one-dimensional, lifeless viewing materials.
The pictures were taken in recent years at museums and galleries in Basel, Berlin, Zurich, New York, Prague, Paris and Chicago.
