Jan Banning: India
© Jan Banning / laif
For his project 'Bureaucratics', the Dutch photographer Jan Banning, born in 1954, has taken a look behind the scenes of government offices in various different countries and cultural regions of the world. He has portrayed government officials at their desks, from the humble archivist to the supreme prefect. He has created a photographic study of the culture, rituals and symbols of public administration a collection which at the same time constitutes a subtle commentary on the globalisation debate.
Jan Banning started the project in the year 2003, with a series of portraits of Indian civil servants; this was followed by trips to Russia, Bolivia, Liberia, France, Yemen, China and the USA. The exhibition at the Cicero Gallery for Political Photography shows pictures from all eight countries.
The exhibition has been organised in partnership with the Agentur laif [laif Agency] of Cologne.
