In Nietzsche's view, the human being is 'an animal that has not yet become fixed'. Only through the conversion of this imputedly rational primate in relation to the body can he transform himself into an integrated and successful entity.
From earliest times artists, writers and philosophers have shown an interest in the curious opposition of human beings and animals from Aristotle to Bruno, from Voltaire to Kant, from Ovid to Kafka, from Bosch's disturbing visionary worlds to Matthew Barney's metamorphoses.
Roberto Kusterle picks up on the relationship with the animal's otherness by way of a process of transformation, in which human and animal nature melt together to give life to indefinable creatures. The scenarios of Susan Donath point to our usurpation of natural space, by showing animals in their turn invading our domestic worlds. Both artists explore the spaces of collective memory, with all the nightmares and wish-fulfilments they contain.
In collaboration with the IIC (Italian Institution of Culture) and the Sächsische Landesvertretung.
