In his exhibition 'Dioramen' ['Dioramas'], Torsten Solin presents us with photos in light boxes showing attractive young women, naked and buxom, in a pleasing attitude in the midst of a surreal landscape. Sometimes their faces are concealed by animal masks, sometimes they are surrounded by stuffed animals or dolls in the open air. Is this crazy and deranged, pornographic and provocative, or is it the outcome of artistic calculation?
Torsten Solin's 'Dioramas' series comprises compositions of erotomanic dream images, the distilled content of which focuses on themes like beauty and vanitas rerum, drawing its inspiration from dualisms like those of eros and thanatos, existence and non-existence, reality and illusion. Solin's scenic arrangements of nature permit us an insight into a subjective world that exists in its own right, tempt us towards voyeurism, encourage us to go on dreaming and invoke in a time of increasing alienation, 'discorporation' and worldwide homogenisation a new florescence of romanticism, based on the ongoing search for the true and the beautiful.
