This second solo exhibition at Hunchentoot by Goldsmiths (University of London) graduate Gregor Stephan presents his most recent work. 'Five Seconds Later' explores visual perception at the limits of the visible, as seen in relation to time. All the series of urban landscapes and portraits shown in the exhibition are based on analogue photographs where the negatives were exposed for just five seconds. This prolonged exposure with an open shutter transforms urban landscapes and their denizens into a dark negative. A high-resolution scan of the negative gives rise to a pallid, scratched and grainy texture, with an element of misty colour thrown in. The technical imperfection of the photos is only apparent. People and the landscape are alike reduced to a physical phenomenon, characterised more by light and paling shadows than by profile or volume. The subjects have been caught in a floating state between manifestation and disappearance.
