Nina Schmitz and Oliver Mauelshagen have made a name for themselves with their staged photography, which has a powerful affinity with film both in content and in artistic terms. Their elaborate series of photographs imitate stories and characters. References to film history play a part here, as does an engagement with the narrative modes of film.
These HEROES are always film heroes reduced to the thing that typifies them, the pose. But there is something disturbing here an irony at one's own expense, an unashamedly artificial setting with photographic wallpaper and reflected flashlights. Nor is it explained why the persons presented here, of all people, should be regarded as heroes. The viewer can find the answers if he follows the indications in the photos, and gives his associations free rein.
In the end it becomes clear that these works hang between reality and a stage presentation, and that what appears so artificial actually has a background in reality namely, the world of our collective pictorial memory.
