The exhibition 'kinder > bilder' ['children > pictures'] presents a selection of prizewinning works from the Deutscher Jugendfotopreis [German Youth Photography Prize]. It shows how children come to discover photography as a subjective means of expression. The pictures on exhibition have been made by children up to the age of twelve as a way of engaging with the world they live in, and as an experiment with the possibilities of the medium. Whether playful or serious, documentary, deliberately arranged or digitally processed the results are as varied as the circumstances that gave rise to them. The exhibition should inspire children, parents and teachers to discover for themselves the pleasures of creative media design and realise the potential of photography as a unique artistic idiom.
The Deutscher Jugendfotopreis has been in existence since 1961. It is organised by Kinder- und Jugendfilmzentrum in Deutschland (KJF), acting on the instructions of the Bundesjugendministerium [Federal Ministry of Youth]. Under the auspices of the exhibition an event will be held in cooperation with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie (DGPh), Training and Further Training division, on the topic of 'Photography and Media Competence' (date to be announced).
