It's 1961, the war has been over for sixteen years. On 13 August the heralded border line of the Soviet sector of Berlin becomes a reality, cutting it off from the rest of the city and petrifying the world. Berlin is now, like the rest of Germany, divided into two parts East Berlin and West Berlin. Soon there will be stories in the news that Germans trying to cross from east to west are dying are being cut down in the act of trying to cross the border, which is now being transformed, piece by piece, into a wall. The Berlin Wall. The wall of shame. So what motivated a young press photographer to drive across Germany in a Renault Dauphine in the depth of winter, to produce a photographic report that had not been commissioned by any journal or agency? He ended up photographing something that it is hard to put into words. It goes by the name of grief. (Hervé Le Goff)
