Poses are message that lodge in the pictorial memory; their language is the whole body. Whereas in art with a political or religious motivation they are generally unmistakable evidence of a claim to power, in popular culture they flourish as a ritualised and coded form of posing.
MannSbilder (a gay Berlin photographic club, founded in 1993) has been investigating the phenomenology of the pose in depth. The artists concentrate on the aspect of bodily language, reflecting the literally 'positioned' aspect of the pose as well as its performative effect. Individual members of the club are also exhibiting their work in the Basement of Laine-Art.
As a counterpoint to this, aura photography from Schlomographische Aktion Berlin is being shown in the Nano-Galerie. The 'schlomographs' a group of three members of the MannSbilder club have been focusing for more than a decade on light artistry based on analogue media, and the unconventional directions in which this can be taken.
