L. Fiorillo: Touristen und Araber vor dem Sphinx von Giza, um 1880, Albuminpapier
© Ägyptisches Museum und Papyrussammlung
Already in the 19th century, the pyramids and the Sphinx were the main attraction for travellers visiting Egypt. The large-format sepia-tinted paper prints that professional photographers sold in their studios at tourist centres were souvenirs that proved they had been there. As a result of the photographers' continual endeavour to offer the buyer something new a picture never seen before over some forty years thousands of shots were created from every imaginable angle. Pictures of what is apparently the same view nonetheless reveal that the motifs have been presented in an individual and artistic manner. We can also detect traces of the changes which the pyramids' plateau and the surrounding landscape have undergone in the course of years. Atmospheric shots in which the pyramids are reflected in flood waters underline the fact that photos are records of the time. The exhibition includes around 65 vintage photos taken between 1857 and 1900, as well as some stereophotos and postcards many of which have never been shown before.
