'It was pure curiosity that launched me on this journey. Stimulated by an old photograph of a soldier that I found in my mother's attic, I set off to search for traces.'
The photo shows Leo Dunz (1916-96), the photographer's grandfather, in Wehrmacht uniform. He never uttered a word about what he experienced in the years from 1941 to 1945, or about his time as a prisoner of war in Siberia, which lasted until 1947.
With painstaking and detailed work, Florian Schwarz reconstructs his grandfather's journey from his being taken prisoner in February 1945 in Poznan, Poland, to the Siberian city of Asbest, and sets out to follow his traces. 65 years after the return of Leo Dunz, this 'whither and back' record has been created the visual diary of the trip of one born later. It reports on an exploration of family history and world history, and shows us images that bring the past into focus images of people who could still be questioned about what has never been said, along with images that repeatedly reflect our deeply felt longing for human attachment.
