These impressive photographs take the viewer into a strange and distant world that at the same time affects us oppressively Afghanistan.
Taken between 2002 and 2007, the pictures show a country involved in the turmoil of radical change. The fearful consequences of the war, and the destruction of the country's cultural heritage (as in the vandalised Buddhas of Bamiyan), have been captured as they occurred. Also shown are cultural monuments like the mosque district of Mazar-e Sharif, landscapes that are thousands of years old and natural marvels like the Blue Lakes. But the main focus of the photographer's interest is always on human beings their daily life, their concerns and their suffering.
On his travels through Afghanistan Helmut R. Schulze visited hospitals and schools, accompanied German soldiers on their patrols and penetrated regions that today are no longer accessible. These impressive images, which give us an authentic picture of Afghanistan in these years, are the result.
