Where is it located, this stillness, the peripheral zones of which Walther Grunwald investigates in this series of black and white photographs, created in the years between 2004 and 2008?
Places and motifs withdraw from us as a result of the deliberate lack of focus they are intuited, rather than clearly distinguishable or definitive in a documentary sense. On the edge of stillness they open up an intermediate realm, from the deep silence of which new spaces and conceptual landscapes come into being.
A sunrise in back light, a megalith tomb in Brittany, a Manhattan skyline they all cast their shadows alike, with a kind of melancholy self-effacement. The genius loci remains silent. On which side of the peripheral zone do we stand? Outside or inside the stillness? Grunwald's poetic approach suggests such questions. It is up to the viewer to find the answers.
