Günther Schaefer's long-term observation of Berlin, over a period of eighteen years, is a synthesis of art, documentary and above all pure delight in the exciting possibilities of photography. In terms of content, major events alternate with quiet themes of no less importance. The selection of pictures brings together basic philosophical conceptions, aesthetic points of view, historic connections and political aspects in such a way as to complement one another. In addition, the entire work is dominated by the serial aspect, which is only made possible by the lapse of time. This is Berlin, the one-time boundary of the world, as it changes over the course of time fixed by the camera to its symbolic sites which have lodged deep in global memory as historic points of conflagration. A composition of light and shade, at the same time a kind of 'The times they are a-changing' in visual/musical notation, the score being dictated by contemporary history. 'To think while seeing to see while thinking' has been Schaefer's artistic motto in creating this work.
