The black and white photos of Ursula Schulz-Dornburg show the domestic dwellings, rice granaries and tomb houses of the Toraja people in the mountains of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Quite unaffected by the colonial development of the country, this is an architecture that does not just have a protective function but exhibits a symbolism that embraces the whole universe. The view of the photographer does not elevate the buildings into a monument, but rather registers them in the context of village structure and landscape.
'Dwelling houses, rice granaries and tomb houses stand there like spaceships that have just touched down. Stranded in the rioting vegetation, but ready to take off at any moment and served and inhabited by people who are not in a hurry, because they see the small and the big things of life as being interlinked.' (Peter Kammerer)
Ursula Schulz-Dornburg has acquired an international reputation, with numerous publications and exhibitions in Europe and the USA (at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, for example, and the Chicago Art Institute). The artist lives in Düsseldorf.
