During their last stay in Japan, photographer Jörg Fahlenkamp and the performing artist, Heini Nukari, had the idea of creating a joint artistic project. Japan is a country that allows for sharp contrasts within society. Quiet is an essential element of Japanese culture, but it is confronted with the hubbub of everyday; almost soundless private worlds of perception are opposed to public utterances of an acoustic or visual nature. Heini Nukari has been experimenting with linguistic parallels between Finnish and Japanese. As non-verbal communication is essential to Japanese, Nukari works with people's 'inner sound tracks' with what people keep back when they talk to one another. Inspired in his turn by visits to Japanese houses and the living spirit of place, Jörg Fahlenkamp focuses on the non-perfection of the wabi-sabi ideal of beauty in all its ambiguity. His photographs express this ambivalent relationship. The works of both artists were created contemporaneously, and are presented here as an intrinsically linked project.
