The public image of Neukölln has for the most part been somewhat overdrawn generally in a negative, but more recently sometimes in a positive light. Between the mecca of crime and the new 'in' scene there remains little space for what Neukölln actually is a district of Berlin with a population that would put many independent cities in the shade. After all, 300,000 people cannot be gangsters and cool cats to the last man. Their life is defined, here as elsewhere, by ordinary and everyday circumstance.

Thomas Lobewein shows this normality in all its facets and nuances creating a portrait of Neukölln that has little to do with the tabloid headlines.
