Katharina Gaenssler: "my space. Tirana-Berlin". Digitale Montage (Ausschnitt) zur Vorbereitung der Foto-Installation aus 4000 Einzelbildern
© 2008 Katharina Gaenssler
Katharina Gaenssler's working approach can best be described as a kind of spatial transfer. She takes thousands of photos in space A based on an imaginary grid, which she then prints out and applies to the wall in space B in the form of wallpaper. For the Third European Month of Photography in Berlin, however, not just 'empty architecture' but a whole exhibition is being transferred. This makes the work of the Munich artist the centrepiece of the project 'my space', which shows photographs of German and Albanian artists on the theme of space, initially in Tirana. That is where the raw material has been created for Gaenssler's installation, which inscribes the public Albanian exhibition setting on a Berlin private gallery. This is anything but an exact replication, however: freehand gridwork and focusing create a completely new spatial illusion that has an almost impressionistic effect and as if in a kind of Trojan horse, the exhibits are 'imported' as well.
