When you hear the name of Jacobi in a photographic context, you immediately think of Lotte Jacobi. The work of her younger sister Ruth is practically unknown. It is now being shown for the first time in a comprehensive exhibition at Jüdisches Museum Berlin.
Born in 1899 to a family that had been actively engaged in photography for three generations, Ruth Jacobi received her photographic training at the Lettehaus in Berlin. After working for three years in the family studio in Berlin, she continued her work in the USA from 1927, returning to the Atelier Jacobi in Joachimsthalerstrasse in 1931. In 1935 Ruth Jacobi finally emigrated to the USA. For a year she had a joint photographic studio with her sister in New York, then she opened a studio in her own right. After 1940 she retired from professional photography almost completely.
Ruth Jacobi's shots include portraits, still lifes, documentaries, travel pictures and experimental photography. The exhibition shows some 70 of her pictures.
