Sandra Kantanen: The swamp
© 2006 Gallery TaiK
The Finnish artist Sandra Kantanen belongs to the Helsinki School. In these recent works she has concentrated on landscapes, still lifes and plants. The title of the exhibition, Shadow Images, points to the theory of ideas of the Greek philosopher Plato, according to which everything we perceive in this world is really only a shadow or reflection of true being. With Timothy Persons as curator, the exhibition shows for the first time new pictures that were taken by the artist in China, Tibet and Japan. Inspired by these exotic cultures, Kantanen has developed a unique pictorial idiom. The landscapes and plants she photographs give her a point of departure in her search for the ideas that lie behind the immediate world surrounding us.
