In its 'Spot on...' series, ifa-Galerie Berlin presents for the first time one of the most important cultural events of the African continent to be held in Germany: 'VII Rencontres Africaines de la Photographie' ['VII African Photographic Encounters'], the internationally prestigious photographic biennial from Bamako, Mali. One of the best known African photographers and curators, Akinbode Akinbiyi, one of the curators involved in Rencontres 2007, accepted the invitation of ifa-Galerie Berlin to put together a selection of pictures that give an informative impression of the quality and variety of photography in Africa today.
The title and theme of Rencontres 2007 was 'In the City and Beyond'. From this major exhibition, eleven African photographers have been selected who grapple with the structures of city and country and engage with the theme of urbanisation giving rise to a message that crosses national frontiers.
