In Arabic sumud means persistence or steadfastness. As a fundamental attitude of the Palestinians today, the word expresses the unshakable courage for living which makes it possible for them to stand firm against the afflictions of the omnipresent Israeli occupation. Berlin photographer James Prineas' exhibition 'The Spirit of Sumud' illustrates the beauty of the country, and the life circumstances and way of life of its inhabitants, in an impressive selection of pictures and texts.
First shown in October 2006 at the Bethlehem Peace Center, 'The Spirit of Sumud' can now be seen in Europe for the first time. James Prineas' pictures give us an alternative view of the country, one marked by a different emphasis but nonetheless important, and in contrast with prevailing conceptions and images of Palestine and its inhabitants today.
