They must have fallen in love at some point first with one another, and then with the mountains. Over a period of thirty years or more we watch a couple slowly growing old, whose photographic double portraits, taken with automatic shutter release, allow us to share vicariously in what was perhaps their greatest passion holidays in the Alps. Andrea Stultiens has made a selection from a vast legacy of slides to present us with the fascinating love story of D. and G., about whom we know nothing except that they liked travelling and taking photographs.
The Dutch photographer Andrea Stultiens works in the field of what is known as vernacular photography. She uses copious photographic legacies to reconstruct the story of a life, frequently visiting the locations herself to provide additional documentation. 'Travels and Escapes' is a series dealing with the flight from everday routine, which looks into the role of photography in this connection. Also on view is her grandiose series 'Komm, mein Mädchen, in die Berge' ['Come, my girl, into the mountains'] and her Berlin project 'Green', as well as two others. A catalogue is being brought out by the Verlag für Bildschöne Bücher.
