Old Berlin has not just disappeared, it has actually been forgotten, is the conclusion of the planning and architectural sociologist Harald Bodenschatz. Berlins vergessene Mitte [Berlins Forgotten Centre] is the first photographic exhibition to be dedicated in the form of a monograph to the historic centre of Berlin, and to recall its significance to our collective consciousness. Out of a rich deposit of surviving photographs of the heart of the city between the Spree Canal and suburban train lines, pictures have been selected showing the beauty of these lost urban spaces as well as the massive transformations that have taken place between 1840 and 2010. At the same time, the exhibition represents a summary history of street photography. From the earliest beginnings, the city was a principal theme for photographers. The exhibition reveals the development of photographic techniques and the different approaches of architectural and municipal photographers and photographic journalists, as well as showing the artistic signatures of outstanding documentarians of Berlin.
