On the occasion of the 100th birthday of Izis (Israëlis Bidermanas), Freundeskreis Willy-Brandt-Haus e.V. [Friends of the Willy Brandt House, Regd. Assn.] is joining with the Berlin Institute of French Culture to host a comprehensive retrospective of around 300 works of the well-known Franco-Lithuanian photographer. The exhibition traces a fascinating portrait of the artist, who left his homeland in 1930 at the age of 19 to seek his fortune in the Paris of his dreams. After the War he worked as an independent journalist; from 1949 he was a press photographer for the journal Paris Match. He achieved recognition above all for his portraits of Jean Cocteau, Colette, Édith Piaf and many other notable personalities of the day.
The Willy Brandt House is showing his impressive portraits of Resistance fighters taken in 1944, as well as the photographic reports Das ewige Paris [Eternal Paris] (19451977), Der Charme von London [The Charm of London] (1952) and Israel 1955 ein Land im Aufbau [Israel 1955 a Country under Construction].
Izis died in Paris in 1980.
