Hajo Rose: Selbstportrait vor der Bauhausfassade

Finally a house made of steel and glass! That was how Hajo Rose described the Bauhaus Building when commencing his studies in 1930. On the occasion of his 100th birthday, the Bauhaus Archive of Berlin is showing the first comprehensive individual exhibition of the Bauhaus students work. Hajo Rose experimented with different materials and techniques. The photomontage of his self-portrait in front of the Bauhaus façade and his typewriter cloth print designs are classic examples of his exceptional originality.
In 1933 he received the last Bauhaus diploma, emigrating in the following year to Amsterdam, where he worked as a graphic artist and taught at the Nieuwe Kunstschool [New College of Art]. His poster Amsterdam won a prize at the Paris World Expo in 1937. After the end of the Second World War he continued to work as a graphic artist, photographer and teacher.
This exhibition focuses on his time at the Bauhaus and in Amsterdam, while including a preview of his later work. Some 80 of Roses photographic and typographical works are on view.
