The Alfred Ehrhardt Foundation is showing a retrospective of the work of Manfred Kage in parallel to the exhibition Mikrofotografie Schönheit jenseits des Sichtbaren [Microphotography Beauty beyond the Visible], jointly organised with the Sammlung Fotografie der Kunstbibliothek im Museum für Fotografie [Photographic Collection of the Art Library at the Museum of Photography]. Born in 1935, Kage is Germanys most important microphotographer. In 1959 he founded his Institut für wissenschaftliche Fotografie und Kinematografie [Institute for Scientific Photography and Cinematography] at Schloss Weissenstein a laboratory packed right up to the ceiling with microphotographic equipment. Like a Gyro Gearloose of microphotography who invents something never seen before, he developed a system for colouring grid electron microscope photographs and was one of the earliest users of the U-matic video system. His photographic works have been exhibited in the artistic context of subjective Photography, Informel and Gruppe ZERO. The exhibition Mikrofotografie Retrospektive Manfred Kage [Microphotography a Manfred Kage Retrospective] shows more than 100 photos, 10 films and 1 microphotographic apparatus.
