As one of the few educational establishments for photography in Berlin, the Neue Schule für Fotografie reserves a special place for analogue photography. At the same time, over the past several years, traditional darkroom work has become increasingly popular again, which translates into the work of many students here. They explore the elaborate handicraft, haptic qualities, and materiality of the medium and deliberately count on the surprise effect in the result; they seek inspiration in the dynamics and unpredictability of the analogue photographic process and juxtapose the casualness of digital photography with the carefully considered moment of pressing the shutter. The exhibition, curated by photographer and instructor Eva Maria Ocherbauer, does justice to this passion. The exhibited works of former and current students at the Neue Schule für Fotografie were all created in the darkroom. The choice was made for individual images whose atmosphere and effect owe their authenticity solely to the analogue medium.

Taking photographs in digital culture
SymposiumThe mass dissemination of images via social media; the creation of photographs and films by means of devices not connected to the human eye; identifying, selecting, and evaluating images on the basis of algorithms—these and other factors have altered our concept of photography.
In contributions coming from both artistic and theoretical perspectives, the symposium investigates practices of producing and perceiving imagery under the conditions of digital culture. What new possibilities present themselves, and what critical questions should we be asking?
