“AM”, the new series of works by Andreas Herzau, uses the example of Angela Merkel to examine the representation of female power and the relationship between politics and the public sphere. For his photographic investigations, over a period of years Andreas Herzau accompanied the chancellor and head of the CDU party at her public appearances. “AM” depicts the theatricality, the absurdities, and the realities of the political establishment; the loneliness, the struggle, the power, and the injuries the political profession entails. Herzau’s work mobilizes the collective visual knowledge of one of the most widely photographed persons in the political arena; using cropped and sometimes mysteriously coded images, he deconstructs rituals of public orchestration and lets unexpected details speak for themselves. With his black-and-white photographs, Andreas Herzau counters the inflationary multitude of images of Angela Merkel with an attempt to do visual justice to one of the most influential personalities of our time.

Portfolio Review

The Portfolio Review gives photographers from Berlin the opportunity to present their work to experts from various fields of photography. In intensive 20-minute one-to-one discussions, they can make new professional contacts with picture editors, exhibition institutions and galleries and receive valuable feedback. The Portfolio Walk, to which the general public is invited to view the work of the participating photographers, concludes the Portfolio Review.

The programme is funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) and the City of Berlin. Therefore, only photographers from Berlin can participate.

Portfolio Walk

At the portfolio review RICH AND FAMOUS 2018, 20 selected photographers from Berlin will have the opportunity to present their work in 20-minute one-to-one interviews to renowned experts from magazines, exhibition institutions and galleries. In the subsequent Portfolio Walk, they present their work to the public. Get-together with drinks and pretzels.

Artist talk

The new artistic series AM by Andreas Herzau uses the example of Angela Merkel to explore the relationship between politics and the public as well as the representation of female power. For his photographic research, Andreas Herzau accompanied the CDU Chair and Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel for years at public appearances. In conversation with Katharina Mouratidi, artistic director of f3 - freiraum für fotografie, Andreas Herzau gives personal insights into the development of the exhibition and book project.
