Apparently Berlin

K.T. Blumberg, Wiebke Loeper, Torsten Schumann, Wolfgang Zurborn

The works of these four photographers visualize subjective values in everyday life. For them, the special quality of the photographic medium consists in questioning one’s own criteria of perception in order to implement them in an experiment in seeing. In Berlin—Meeting History, which depicts encounters between people and important locations, the photographer K.T. Blumberg explores current everyday realities at historic sites. Wiebke Loeper’s color photographs from the series zu eigen portray the photographer’s appropriation of her environment as well as her astonishment at the disorder in architectural and spatial environments. In More Cars, Clothes, and Cabbages, Torsten Schumann inquires into the ordinary in urban space and marvels over the situations and things he discovers. Wolfgang Zurborn’s series Indian Megacities is a photographic rollercoaster ride between the spiritual values of Indian culture and the ubiquitous symbols of the Western way of life.

Finding Vivian Maier

Film screening

The documentary from the year 2013 narrates how the American filmmaker and author John Maloof “discovered” the photographer Vivian Maier. “The result is a fascinating portrait of an artist with an open eye, whose lens was able to gaze into the souls of strangers,” as the Berlinale info brochure wrote in 2014, when the film came in second in the Panorama Audience Prize, category documentary. The film garnered additional awards at other international festivals.
