Ute Mahler & Werner Mahler

Ute Mahler, Werner Mahler

The exhibition “Essences. Four Decades of Photographs” features works from Ute and Werner Mahler’s collaborative series Monalisen der Vorstädte (Mona Lisas of the Suburbs, 2011), photographs they shot for the magazine Sibylle, and early works by Werner Mahler. Also on view are a series of portraits Ute Mahler took of the dancer Jutta Deutschland from the 1980s as well as a body of work she photographed in 1979 during a memorable stay in Paris.
Although the exhibition can only show a small part of the two photographers’ wide-ranging and remarkable oeuvre, it offers insight into the many facets of their creative work and presents several iconic photographs. Ute and Werner Mahler have succeeded in developing and perfecting their imagery and technique in an impressive way. At the same time, the two co-founders of the OSTKREUZ Agency of Photographers have managed to create series in which the qualities and experiences of both photographers merge, despite the wide range of tasks and lecturing activities they’re involved with.
