Ping without Pong—Gesture without Response

Dialogue of Dysfunctions

Sylvia Henrich, Stefanie Seufert

Sylvia Henrich’s new works largely operate on digital terrain. Misdirected or deliberately rendered out of control at specific junctures, computer technology is the medium that generates the image, where subjectivity meets autocorrect. In Stefanie Seufert’s works, aesthetic signs are liberated from the real and the virtual worlds. Pseudo-realities, whether full of air or emblematic, as with inflatables or emojis, are alluded to or depicted outright. The photographic support is the material for conceptually determined sequences of acts that lead to distortion and carry it into the third dimension. The two artists, who developed the exhibition concept together, are connected by an experimental approach to the medium. Parameters of image generation are shifted, function and dysfunction pitted against one another. In the process, aesthetic decisions are purposefully delegated to the idiosyncrasy of the material or to algorithms. Meaning is dissected in order to bring new interpretive possibilities into play.
