THE WANDERER UPON A CASTLE CAME...

Anne Zahalka

Through a residency in Berlin I had my first experience of living alone completely disassociated from language and familiar things. I enjoyed the anonymity of being a foreigner and found an unexpected comfort at which I could watch and observe. The series was an attempt to describe the strangeness of Berlin and my initial feelings of being there. The old gothic building in which I found myself living, lay in close proximity to the Berlin wall – a forbidding back-fence. The physical and psychological presence of this structure had a considerable effect on the way I perceived my surroundings. I had the unsettling feeling of being watched, while watching. As an outsider I became engaged in a way of looking that sought to reveal difference and absorb similitude.
