Contact restrictions were imposed and subsequently relaxed; the perception of body and bodily contact entered a new phase as yet to be explored. Every Zoom conference and every walk outside was accompanied by a feeling of almost, but not quite being together. When the borders were closed, the European idea came to a physically manifest standstill. Pandemic: a state of emergency that creates new realities.

How will our coexistence change, from the personal environment to global proportions? Everywhere around the world, this multi-faceted question will be keeping us busy for some time. Visualizing, documenting, and imagining it is the theme of the exhibition ‘close by’ in the ‘BFF Triebwerk’ series.

And yet the idea of coexistence is already deeply imbedded in the DNA of the BFF (Professional Association of Freelance Photographers and Film Creators): an invaluable multiplicity of 500 members not in search of a winner, as this would produce many losers, but for whom curiosity about diversity is paramount and whose mutual discovery is characterized by interest and respect.
