Photomontages, created in the photo lab or in camera, were an important part of the ‘special effects’ of analogue photography.
They were used as early as the mid-19th century for the exposure of clouds through to complex multiple exposures, for example, for group pictures.
In response to new demands, they were used in fashion/product and advertising photography, as a political instrument and as a means of artistic expression.
As part of the exhibition METAMORPHOSIS, works by Heinz Hajek-Halke and Björn Albert will be analyzed. How exactly was the image created? Precisely how was it made? The working steps are explained clearly and comprehensibly in the laboratory.
Björn Albert, operator of the BA AP photo laboratory, has been working on the Sophisticated Landscapes project which involves photomontages/multiple exposures since 2021.
