Between Frankfurter Tor and Strausberger Platz: Guided Tour of Karl-Marx-Allee, 1st Construction Phase
Achim Bahr

Between 1952 and 1957, a boulevard 2.3 kilometres long and 90 metres wide was built in record time as part of the ‘Berlin National Reconstruction Programme’ on what was then known as Stalinallee, lined on both sides by seven large apartment blocks. The high-rise building on Weberwiese by Herrmann Henselmann and Rolf Göpfert was an iconic prototype for the architectural design of the avenue; it was followed by buildings by the architects (collective) Egon Hartmann, Richard Paulick, Hanns Hopp, Karl Souradny, Kurt W. Leucht and Hermann Henselmann. The development of Berlin's east-west axis is regarded as the last realisation of a large-scale overall urban planning concept in Europe. The moderate monumentality of the architecture and the eclectic stylistic features are still impressive today.

Achim Bahr from the citizens' association STALINBAUTEN e.V. invites you on a tour of the residential neighbourhood. Walking past the imposing residential buildings of today's Karl-Marx-Allee, he stops at prominent points and provides information about the architecture and historically or politically significant events.
