In Old High German, the word Gift (which means poison) originally meant ‘given’ or ‘gift’, before the meaning changed to ‘deadly gift’. The title of this exhibition, which approaches the themes of agriculture and biodiversity through artistic and documentary means, refers to biological diversity as a gift passed down from generation to generation – and at the same time to the acute threat facing the fundaments of human life.

In the Anthropocene era, humans have become one of the single most important factors to cause change in the Earth’s biological, geological and atmospheric processes. Yet the majority of images conveyed by media worldwide to convey the issues faced by agriculture and biodiversity revolve around a few obvious motifs that now seem tired and clichéd.

The goal of the project GIFT – Experiments in Agriculture and Biodiversity is to break this image cycle. To this end, students and alumni of the Neue Schule für Fotografie have developed new and surprising perspectives on this set of themes.
