KIEZ KIDS FACES
An analogue photography project by Jason McGlade in collaboration with the children of the Theodor-Heuss-Gemeinschaftsschule
Jason McGlade

KIEZ KIDS FACES is an offshoot project of KIEZ FACES. It was realized with the children of the Theodor-Heuss-Gemeinschaftsschule. The portrait photographer Jason McGlade photographed them and then showed them how a darkroom works and silver gelatin prints are made. The children interviewed one another, providing a corresponding text for each portrait in the exhibition.

Every week, McGlade takes to the streets with his analogue camera and records interesting faces of neighbours and passers-by in Berlin-Moabit. He develops the photographs himself in his studio to create handmade silver gelatin prints. McGlade exhibits the more interesting portraits in his studio and in the windows of shops, cafés, and bars in the neighbourhood. The people portrayed are given a photographic print of themselves. The project promotes a sense of community: familiar faces grow even more familiar. Everyone is part of a community and is seen. Contacts arise to local companies, social institutions, and neighbourhood cultural centres.

The initiative, funded by the Senate Administration, is in its third year and has developed into a very successful project with a high level of social commitment throughout Moabit. In 2022, the project was exhibited as part of the opening of a neighbourhood shop; the Instagram account is growing day by day.

KIEZ FACES is an exhibition project for the Naturwissenschaftliche und kulturelle Bildungsverbund Moabit (Moabit Scientific and Cultural Education Association) and the Elly Family Centre / Elementary level at the Theodor-Heuss Community School.
