The Song of the Valley
Syrian Refugees in Lebanon Sing Their Stories
Matthias Leupold, Marie Séférian

‘You can’t live in Lebanon, with this warmth and heat. Syria is home’. Improvising, Ammar sings in a refugee camp in the Bekaa Valley on the border with Syria, describing his discontent. Like Ammar, millions of people wait here in makeshift camps for the war to end. Syrian and Lebanese refugees sing about their everyday life, their desires and dreams.

The German-Lebanese jazz singer Marie Séférian interprets their music. This installation of photography, video and sound is an artistic taking of stock that documents the conditions in the crisis-ridden country and seeks to restore the dignity of the uprooted people through interviews and songs. There will also be a live singing lecture as part of the EMOP Berlin 2023.
