The German Youth Photo Award (DJF) is one of Germany’s most traditional photography competitions. WE_LOVE is the expression of 60 years of youth culture: passionate struggles with love, burning questions about the self and the other, fiery commitment, ecstatic feelings for music, piercing gazes at others – questions about diversity, gender fluidity, family, politics and society.

Since 1963, the DJF has been a field of experimentation for young photographers. Co-founder of the competition and director of photokina – Bilderschauen Leo Fritz Gruber writes about his historical photo film Wir zwei (We Two) (1966): ‘Standing alongside one another, for one another, a togetherness of the two sexes was on the minds of many people who submitted. It was the main thing that moved them. And they showed it in countless variations without reserve’.

The film is part of the anniversary exhibition organized by Prof. Dr. Nadja Köffler, Tilman Lothspeich, Prof. Dr. Ulrike Mietzner and Jan Schmolling; the competition was carried out by the German Children and Youth Film Centre on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Youth.
