Eligibility Requirements
The coming edition of EMOP Berlin will take place from March 1–31, 2025 and will be organized by Kulturprojekte Berlin together with the participating partner institutions. In approximately 100 exhibitions, EMOP Berlin offers a current range in international art photography and how it is presented in the city’s institutions, galleries, and numerous project spaces. At the same time, with its broad supporting and educational programme, EMOP Berlin gives space and direction to the current discourses surrounding the medium of photography.
The prerequisite for your participation is your exhibition proposal to the festival. Museums, exhibition halls, memorial sites, archives, collections, libraries, cultural institutes, universities, art academies and other training organizations in the field of photography, municipal and private galleries and project spaces in Berlin that work with photography professionally are welcome to take part. Photographers and artists can also submit to the open call as individuals or as a group/collective, provided they have an exhibition space in Berlin.
Your exhibition project should coincide as closely as possible with the festival month (March 1–31, 2025). We’d prefer that you open your exhibition within the festival month. An exhibition run beyond the month of March is fine.
Application does not imply a right to participate. EMOP Berlin does not financially support projects and charges no participation fees.
Application Period
The application period begins on Monday, June 3, 2024 and ends on Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at midnight.
Submission of Exhibition Proposals / Application Form
For this year’s edition, the festival’s artistic director created the leitmotif what stands between us. We’d be pleased to see submissions on this theme. However, this is not a requirement. The quality of your exhibition proposal is the main criterion for participation.
Required Information:
- Your institution
- Contact person (name, email, telephone number)
- Person authorized to sign the application (name, position)
- Exhibition: title, opening date, duration, location, abridged concept (max. 1,200 characters including spaces)
- Artist(s): Name + brief artist biography for each
Submission of image files: The online form must be submitted together with 5–8 images, which also serve as material for EMOP Berlin and the jury. Please make sure to select images that clearly convey your exhibition proposal to the jury. (Minimum image size: landscape format 1,000 pixels wide / portrait format 700 pixels wide) Images are not uploaded in the online form, but sent separately as a download link via email to emop.berlin@kulturprojekte.berlin.
When filling out the online form, you can easily return to the fields that have already been completed. If you close the online form before sending it, the data entered will not be saved. After submitting your application, a copy of your information will be sent to the email address you provide in the form.
Your data is not intended for publication, but is used exclusively for processing by the EMOP Berlin team and for the jury to carry out the selection process. The following data protection regulations apply: https://emop-berlin.eu/datenschutz/
Selection Process
From the exhibition proposals submitted, a professional jury made up of the following persons will select those invited to participate in the EMOP Berlin 2025:
- Akinbode Akinbiyi (artist, Berlin)
- Thomas Fischer (gallery owner, Berlin)
- Mira Anneli Naß (art historian and photo theorist, Bremen)
- Prof. Wiebke Loeper (artist and professor of photography, Berlin and Potsdam)
- Maren Lübbke-Tidow (Artistic Director EMOP Berlin)
The list of participants will be announced by email in September 2024. Selections will be communicated without listing the individual reasons for an applicant’s invitation to the festival programme.
Cooperation
If your proposal is selected, Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH will draw up a cooperation agreement with you that sets the terms for your presence in the festival’s extensive communication and marketing campaign. EMOP Berlin does not charge a participation fee, but reserves the right to a mandatory catalogue purchase (35 catalogues at 10 Euros each), copies of which you can then resell to your visitors.
The open call has been closed since 31 July 2024. If you have any questions, please contact emop.berlin@kulturprojekte.berlin
