When in the spring of 1928 Walter Gropius resigned from his position as Director of the Dessau Bauhaus, he made a long cherished dream come true: with his wife Ise, he took a trip to the USA. The architect wanted to study modern building technology in America, especially the steel structures of the New York skyscrapers. When he returned, he had a great many photos in his luggage: documentary histories that show the erection of a skyscraper from the excavation of the foundations right through to completion, and virtuoso architectural shots by one of the most notable photographers of America, Charles Sheeler. But there are also photos taken by Gropius himself. These focus on buildings, in the angular view typical of the time, or record private impressions of a visit to the Hopi and Navaho Indians in Arizona. Nine years after this study trip, Walter Gropius finally emigrated to the USA. From then on he was destined himself to have a crucial influence on modern American architecture.
