Budapest is famous for its historic public baths. The special atmosphere of these bathing places is not just a tourist attraction for foreign visitors, it also continues to be an important meeting place for the local inhabitants a place for men and women to converse, for talking to your family and friends. Water and mist blur the contrast of the voices, the light effects and the colours in space. This magical world has fascinated visitors for centuries, whether the building has been lately renovated or has still been in the ruinous state of the postwar years.
Márk Simon (born in Pápa in 1976) is a photographic journalist of the highest order, who won the André Kertész Prize in 2006. This series does not aspire to be a documentary record of Budapest's public baths his aim is rather to portray the hidden aspects of everyday social life. His colour photos bring the daily doings of the bathing habitués into view.
