Mona Breede's photographic work shows people in relation to public (for the most part urban) spaces. Here she develops a view of her subjects their attitudes, movements and interactions that has an aesthetic idiom all its own. The buildings form the foil for the people, acquiring symbolic significance and linking human beings in a social context. This aspect has come to acquire a growing importance for the artist. In addition to the rendering of the observed moment, we can see her increasingly aspiring to a deliberate arrangement of her scenes. When we look more closely, these prove to have many layers of meaning, pointing to loneliness and social tensions. This is presented in almost emblematic form, like tableaus resembling stage settings with a deliberate arrangement and lighting that lends them symbolic force. But the feeling for the reality of urban space is constantly present, together with the endeavour to capture the choreographic and rhythmic beauty of the moment reproduced.
