As one of the most important press photographers of West Berlin, Heinrich von der Becke (1913-1997) documented more than 50 years of Berlin's contemporary history in its many aspects above all the wide variety of Berlin sport as well as national and international sporting events.
Becke learned his trade from the old master of sporting photography in Berlin, Max Schirner. The fascination of sport was something that he never got over. In all Becke photographed 14 Olympic games, countless sporting events and competitions in many fields of sport, as well as covering events on the periphery. He worked for Berliner Tagespresse, illustrated papers, sporting journals, the National Olympic Committee, the Deutscher Sport Bund and the Landessportbund. He shot the Sports Photo of the Year on repeated occasions.
His complete photographic archive, comprising around 1.2 million negatives and 65,000 black and white positives, is preserved at Sportmuseum Berlin. This exhibition shows some 120 selected sports photos by Becke, paying tribute to his creative work as an outstanding sports photographer.
