The term 'values' is such an extensive and multi-layered concept that it must be repeatedly redefined and re-investigated if its meaning is not to remain arbitrary.
Since the 1970s a continual change of values has been going on in the western industrial nations. This has increasingly led to changes in attitudes and behaviour that tend in the direction of non-material values, and a greater emphasis on individualisation and the self-realisation of individual human beings. As a result of current confrontations between eastern and western conceptions of value, the possibility of a universal system of values is more and more being called in question. The withdrawal into the private sphere, the concentration on values like security and freedom and a new understanding of religious sensibility these have been the mandatory consequences of this ongoing process of change.
The exhibition 'Die Annahme von Werten' ['The Assumption of Values'] brings together six different artists, each of whom conducts a photographic investigation into a particular aspect of values. This approach suggests questions in relation to our existing value model.
