Viktor Szemzö: Petralka
2005 © Viktor Szemzö
Setting themselves off against Miro volík, Tono Stano and other photographers of the so-called 'New Wave', a new generation of Slovakian documentary photographers came to the fore in the nineties. They rejected the New Wave's post-modern approach, 'poetic play' and phantasmagoric scenery. Their ideal was a socially and politically motivated form of photography, which took its stand on the commitment to social comment. They saw their photographic work not so much as a contribution to art but rather as a service to society. Parallel to the rise of photojournalism, opposite approaches are gradually coming to make themselves felt. 2005 and 2006 saw the rise to prominence of photographers who were not afraid of manipulating the image, and whose faith in authentic reality was shattered. As three representatives of this point of view, Viktor Szemzö, Peter Homola and Petra Boanská direct the attention of photography to the medium itself exploring the limits of the medium as it helps to define the self-identity of civilisation.
