The theme that all of the works shown in this exhibition have in common are the scars of an epoch marked by war and expulsion, industrial decline, and by civilisation dominating nature. Its the ruins of post-modern, i.e. post-communist, civilisation from Portugal to Turkey that photographers and video artists are concerned with: industrial wastelands, barracks and rehabilitation hospitals decaying, border control systems no longer functioning, or inscriptions on gravestones that are undecipherable.
It was neither the object nor the intention of the artists to name the precise reasons for the disappearance or the decay that these European places and landscapes are being subjected to. And yet the tectonic forces at work in the 20th century are clearly visible: the effects of World War II, the end of the systems of communist imperialism, and the globalisation of our modern world spiraling at an ever higher speed.
The Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung brings the exhibition, on loan from the Literaturhaus München, to a most diverse range of locations in Germany.
